Choose the correct submission route
Use crossover when the card is already encapsulated by another grading company and you want PSA to evaluate it in that holder. Review is intended for a card already in a PSA holder that you believe merits a higher grade. A raw submission begins without the protection of the original company’s sealed-holder context.
An SGC 10, CGC 10 or BGS 9.5 is a result under that company’s system. It does not establish a predetermined PSA result. Before paying, compare the actual card, its label and any available condition report with the reason you want a different holder.
What the minimum grade controls
The minimum is your acceptance condition. It is not a forecast, reservation or request that the grader round upward. PSA says the minimum must be entered for crossover and that selecting 1 accepts any numerical grade. That broad acceptance is a significant choice if you bought the existing slab because of its present grade.
| Your selected minimum | PSA assessment | Holder outcome | Grading charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | Meets 10 | Crosses into PSA | Charged |
| 10 | Does not meet 10 | Original holder returned | Charged |
| 9 | Meets 9 but not 10 | May cross at 9 | Charged |
| 1 | Receives a numerical result below your hoped-for grade | May cross below your target | Charged |
Calculate the cost of a failed attempt
Use the live submission quote for the exact service rather than copying a fee from a different grading route. Add insured inbound shipping, return shipping and any handling charges. Treat that full amount as an expense even if the card comes back unchanged.
Illustrative example: assume the total attempt costs $90 and a successful crossover would add $150 to the net amount you could actually realize after selling costs. Ignoring other differences, the success rate needed just to offset the attempt cost would be $90 ÷ $150 = 60%. That arithmetic is not an estimate of your card’s success probability.
Research the destination grade before choosing a minimum
Compare the exact parallel and card number in the existing holder with the proposed PSA grade. Keep sales near the same date and distinguish completed transactions from current listings. If the intended PSA grade has only one unusual sale, a wide range is more honest than a confident premium.
Write down two outcomes: “kept in its present holder after paying the attempt cost” and “crossed at my minimum.” If either outcome would make you regret the submission, reconsider the minimum or the entire project. A personal preference for uniform holders is valid, but it should be budgeted as a collection expense.
Preserve the current slab and its record
Photograph both sides and the certification number before packing. Keep the card in its current holder for crossover. Do not follow raw-card packing advice that tells you to put every card into a semi-rigid holder; that instruction addresses a different service.
Use the generated form, current shipping instructions and correct item order. If the existing holder is cracked or appears opened, disclose that condition and ask the company which route applies. Damage can interfere with examination and may change what the service can do.
Read the returned result without inventing a reason
If the card does not cross, the result establishes that it did not meet the selected minimum in that examination. It does not identify a specific flaw unless the company provides that explanation. Avoid describing it as proof that the original grader was wrong or that all copies of the issue are poor candidates.
Save the result and actual costs with your inventory. Repeated attempts compound expenses. Before trying again, identify new evidence or a changed collecting objective; hope alone does not change the cost of another unsuccessful attempt.
Frequently asked questions
Do I pay if PSA does not cross the card?
Yes. PSA’s crossover page states that the grading price is charged regardless of whether the minimum is met. Shipping and other order costs also matter.
Can I leave the minimum grade blank?
PSA’s published crossover instructions require a minimum grade. Follow the available submission-form options and ask support if your intended outcome is not clear.
Does a BGS 9.5 automatically become PSA 10?
No. Company grades and standards do not convert automatically. The actual card must satisfy PSA’s assessment and your selected minimum.
Should I crack it out first?
A card removed from its holder no longer follows the same crossover scenario. It exposes you to handling risk and loses the original holder context.
Is crossover the same as Review?
No. Crossover concerns another company’s holder. PSA Review concerns an existing PSA-holdered card submitted for a possible higher grade.
Can I estimate a success probability from photos?
Photos can reveal reasons to be cautious but do not establish a defensible success percentage. Keep any probability assumption clearly labeled as your own scenario.
