What to Do When an eBay Sports Card Arrives Damaged

Document a damaged card delivery, act within the trading-card return window, and separate the buyer's eBay case from the seller's shipping-insurance claim.

The short answer

Photograph the card and packaging immediately, preserve everything and open the appropriate return request through the purchase record. Trading cards have a special short deadline when the seller does not offer returns: the reviewed eBay policy specifies three calendar days. Do not wait for a carrier claim before protecting the order deadline.
  • Calendar days and business days are different clocks.
  • Keep the card, holder, mailer and packing materials unchanged.
  • Describe observed damage precisely instead of speculating about intent.

Inspect and preserve the delivery

Before discarding anything, photograph the outer package, shipping label, internal protection, card front and back, and the specific damage. For a slab, distinguish a holder crack or scratch from visible damage to the card itself. Include a wider image so a close-up has context.

Keep your initial description factual: the slab has a crack at the upper edge, the raw card shows a crease across the back, or the envelope arrived open with an item missing. Avoid claiming a seller deliberately damaged it unless you have evidence. Clear observations give the other party and platform something concrete to assess.

Check the card-specific deadline immediately

As reviewed September 30, 2026, eBay's Money Back Guarantee specifies that trading-card buyers must request a return within three calendar days of the estimated or actual delivery date when the seller does not offer returns. If returns are offered, the seller's stated return window applies. Use the order's displayed deadline and act promptly.

Do not substitute the general return period you remember from another category. A weekend is still part of a calendar-day window. Photographing damage, sending a casual message or waiting for an insurer is not the same as opening the required request. Preserve the case record and any deadline the platform displays.

Open the request from the actual purchase

Use Purchases, select the item, choose the truthful return reason and attach clear images. eBay's reviewed return instructions give the seller three business days to respond before the buyer can ask eBay to step in when unresolved. That response period is separate from the buyer's deadline to open the case.

  1. Describe the discrepancy. Name the damage and its location, connect it to the attached photographs, and avoid mixing several unrelated complaints.
  2. Keep the request active. Follow the case messages and displayed dates. Do not close it merely because someone promises a future resolution you have not received.
  3. Use authorized return instructions. If returning, follow the provided label, destination and ship-by date. Preserve tracking and repack the item carefully.
  4. Record the outcome. Save the refund, replacement or agreed partial-refund terms and verify the completed transaction rather than only a message promising it.

Authenticated orders need their own return route

For an Authenticity Guarantee card, distinguish shipping damage from dissatisfaction with a final-sale item. The program has specific coverage and return conditions, and an authorized return can require reinspection. Preserve its seal and packaging and follow the case destination rather than mailing directly to an address from an old message.

A card arriving in a broken holder does not mean you should open the holder to check whether the card is unharmed. That changes the evidence and the item being returned. Document what you can see, state what remains uncertain and let the authorized process direct the next step.

Keep the seller's carrier claim separate

The seller may need the original mailing receipt, coverage record, transaction value and damage evidence for a shipping claim. Cooperate with reasonable documentation requests, but do not let that investigation replace the marketplace resolution. Ask how packaging will be preserved if a return and a carrier inspection overlap.

Sellers should compare the listing photos, packing record and buyer's images without treating a delivery scan as proof of undamaged contents. Respond within the order process and review the actual policy bought with the label. The carrier, third-party insurer and marketplace can have different forms, deadlines and decision criteria.

Worked timeline: two clocks running together

Illustrative example: a no-returns card is delivered Friday and visible damage is discovered that evening. The buyer documents it and opens the order request immediately instead of waiting until the next working week. A separate seller investigation into transit coverage can continue after the request exists.

If the seller proposes a partial refund, decide whether you actually want to keep the damaged item at that revised cost. A discount does not repair a crease or restore a slab's integrity. If you prefer a return, use the authorized route. Do not demand payment outside the platform or exaggerate damage to negotiate a lower price.

Frequently asked questions

Does no returns mean damage is never covered?

No. Read the applicable Money Back Guarantee provisions and the trading-card deadline. The seller's remorse-return preference is not the whole analysis.

Should I wait for USPS before opening an eBay request?

No. Preserve the marketplace deadline while the separate shipping investigation proceeds. The two processes do not share one automatic clock.

Is a scratched slab the same as a damaged card?

Not necessarily. Photograph and describe each separately. The listing's holder condition and the visible card condition may raise different questions.

Can I throw away the packaging after taking pictures?

Keep it until the relevant case or claim instructions say it is no longer needed. Photos may not replace a requested physical inspection.

Should I repair or clean the card first?

No. Preserve the delivered condition while resolving the issue. Altering the item can change the evidence and the return assessment.
