eBay Best Offer Accepted: Is the Card Reserved Until You Pay?

Separate an accepted card offer from completed payment, check autopay, and handle conflicting eBay counteroffer deadlines without buying duplicate copies.

The short answer

Do not assume an accepted eBay Best Offer reserves a sports card. The current buyer guide says it remains available until payment is completed; enabling autopay can complete payment when the seller accepts. Check the actual offer and purchase record. An obligation to pay and an exclusive hold on the card are different things.
  • Record offer status and payment status separately.
  • Budget for every offer you authorize, especially if automatic payment is enabled.
  • Use the countdown on your actual offer: official counteroffer help pages currently disagree.

What should you check after an offer is accepted?

Open the offer from your signed-in eBay account and inspect the payment result. Save the item number, exact card identity and amount. If payment is still required and you intend to buy, complete the available checkout instead of treating an acceptance message as a finished receipt.

eBay's unpaid-item policy requires buyers to complete purchases they commit to. Its ordinary fallback is payment within four calendar days when automatic collection does not occur; eBay Live has different immediate-payment rules. That policy does not turn an unpaid Best Offer into a four-day reservation.

These are U.S. help-page findings checked October 24, 2026. eBay's buyer guide emphasizes payment securing the item, while its seller guide still includes acceptance language about ending a listing. The seller guide also describes different payment settings. Because those descriptions are not fully aligned, check your transaction's actual state rather than assuming every account follows one screen sequence.

Seller workflow for a genuinely unpaid order

Keep the offer and purchase records separate
  1. OfferAmount and exact card
  2. ResponseAccepted, countered or declined
  3. PaymentVerify the completed transaction
  4. InventoryLog the purchased copy

Schematic. Use the payment record before marking a wanted card as acquired.

Is a seller's discount message the same as your Best Offer?

Best Offer lets a buyer propose a price on an enabled listing. Offers to Buyers is a seller-initiated discount sent to eligible interested shoppers. An open offer does not stop another buyer purchasing the item, according to eBay's Seller Center. Identify which direction the offer came from before applying a remembered rule.

For seller-sent offers, the seller help page explicitly says the first buyer who accepts and successfully pays gets a single-quantity item. Its instructions also exclude shipping from the offer amount. A discounted card therefore still needs a complete checkout calculation.

Use one row per listing when comparing copies. Write down the year, set, card number, parallel, serial stamp or slab certification, visible condition and delivered total. Two similarly titled listings may be different cards; negotiating on one does not make the other an interchangeable backup.

Worked example: two offers can exceed one-card money

Illustrative budget, not a live listing: you want one raw card and authorize a $60 offer on copy A and a $65 offer on copy B. You also estimate $5 shipping and $6 tax for each. If both purchases complete, the planning total is $71 + $76 = $147. A $90 collecting budget would be short by $57, even though each individual proposal looked affordable.

Those shipping and tax figures are invented solely to show the arithmetic; replace them with the actual checkout amounts. Before submitting a second offer, inspect the first one's status and decide whether owning both copies would still fit the plan. Do not rely on a later cancellation to make an overcommitted budget work.

A simple worksheet needs three numbers: confirmed purchases, the full cost of other active commitments, and money still available. Keep a desired purchase separate from a confirmed purchase. This prevents a collection checklist from hiding a second payment you might still need to make.

Why do eBay pages show different counteroffer deadlines?

The current Making a Best Offer page gives 96 hours for a seller counteroffer; the linked Counteroffers page says 24 hours or the listing's end, whichever comes first. They also describe different offer-count limits. We cannot establish one universal counteroffer limit from these conflicting pages. Read the live countdown and remaining-offer message for the exact listing; ask eBay if the account screen itself is inconsistent.

If you entered a mistaken amount, promptly open the offer's available actions. Retraction has eligibility restrictions and is not the same as undoing an accepted purchase. Preserve the amount, response and timestamps if you need support. Do not replace an accidental payment problem with a false damaged-item claim.

For sellers, verify the paid order and correct copy before packing. Keep offer conversations tied to the listing number so another accepted negotiation for a similar card does not get mistaken for this shipment. The separate unpaid-order guide covers cancellation and relisting; this page addresses the buyer's offer-to-payment handoff.

Frequently asked questions

Does an accepted Best Offer always reserve my card?

No. The buyer help page says completed payment secures it. Verify your purchase record, especially when the offer did not use automatic payment.

Can I treat the four-day payment rule as a free hold?

No. The unpaid-item policy describes payment obligations and consequences. It does not promise that an unpaid offer keeps the listing unavailable to other buyers.

Is shipping included in a seller's discounted offer?

The seller instructions exclude shipping from that amount. Compare the completed checkout total with your budget before accepting.

Which counteroffer deadline should I rely on?

Use the countdown on the actual offer and resolve inconsistent account information with eBay. The linked public help pages disagree, as documented above.
