The short answer

PSA 9 means Mint and PSA 10 means Gem Mint under PSA’s standards. The practical buying question is how much extra the exact card’s PSA 10 costs and whether that difference serves your collection. Compare equivalent sales close in time, inspect both copies, and do not assume every PSA 10 is worth a fixed multiple of a PSA 9.
  • Match year, set, parallel, card number and autograph details before comparing grades.
  • Measure the premium in dollars and percentages, using completed sales.
  • The examples below teach the calculation; they are not claimed market sales.

What changes between the two grades

PSA describes Mint 9 as nearly perfect with a minor flaw, while Gem Mint 10 has a tighter overall condition standard. Centering is only one part of that assessment. A card that meets a centering boundary can still have a corner, edge, print or surface issue, and a listing photograph may not reveal it.

Look at front and reverse images, then compare the specific flaw you care about. A visually appealing 9 may suit a display collection. A collector building a uniform Gem Mint set may place more weight on the label. Neither preference establishes what the next buyer will pay.

Build a matched comparison instead of mixing search results

Write an identity string before collecting sales: year, manufacturer, product, card number, player, parallel or variation, serial numbering and autograph status. Keep PSA 9 and PSA 10 searches separate. Exclude lots, raw cards, other graders, different languages and different parallels even when the listing photograph looks similar.

Use a narrow common time window when enough sales exist. A 9 sold before a major player event and a 10 sold afterward can exaggerate the apparent grade premium. Save the sale date, accepted sale amount, shipping and listing URL. Flag damaged slabs or unusual serial numbers as possible exceptions rather than silently discarding inconvenient results.

Use this original sales worksheet

Populate each row with a verified sale. The blank template prevents an asking price or a remembered transaction from becoming an undocumented comp. Five observations per grade would be a starting sample, not a claim that five guarantees reliable valuation.

Calculate the dollar and percentage premium

Illustrative data only: suppose five matched PSA 9 totals are $90, $95, $100, $105 and $110, while five PSA 10 totals are $180, $190, $200, $210 and $220. The medians are $100 and $200. The dollar premium is $100; the percentage premium is ($200 − $100) ÷ $100 = 100%; the price multiple is 2.0×.

These are different ways of describing the same sample. A 2.0× price is a 100% premium, not a 200% premium. Do not average ratios from mismatched cards and then apply that number to a card you have never researched. Report the sample dates, count and range beside the result.

Buying a 9 versus trying to create a 10

Buying a known PSA 9 is a different decision from submitting a raw card that might become a 10. The submission has fees, shipping, uncertain condition outcomes and a delay. A $100 difference between finished grades does not mean spending $100 to chase the higher grade is sensible.

For an existing PSA 9, compare the current Review service with keeping it as it is. Do not assume that a photograph showing no obvious flaw proves the first grade was wrong. If you are buying for enjoyment, set a maximum dollar premium you are comfortable paying and compare the actual cards within that budget.

Use population data as context

A population count describes recorded grading results, not the entire surviving supply or the probability that your raw card will become a 10. Submission choices can be selective, and counts can change. The relationship between available copies and active buyers matters more than a small number presented without context.

Recheck the decision if the available sale sample is thin. One exceptional auction is weak evidence for a normal selling range. A useful conclusion can be that there is not enough matched data yet; that is preferable to inventing a precise premium.

Frequently asked questions

Is PSA 9 a bad grade?

No. Mint 9 is a high condition grade. Whether it fits your collection depends on the specific card, appearance, price and your preferences.

Is PSA 10 always twice the price?

No. The relationship varies by card, date, condition demand and available sales. Calculate the premium for the exact issue rather than using a universal multiplier.

Can a PSA 9 become a PSA 10?

A Review may produce an upgrade, but no upgrade is guaranteed. Compare the service cost and uncertainty before submitting a card already graded 9.

Should I compare asking prices?

Use completed transactions for a market comparison. Asking prices tell you what sellers request, which may differ sharply from what buyers pay.

Are the ten worksheet rows real transactions?

No. They are blank collection fields. The numerical median example is explicitly hypothetical and should be replaced with verified sales for your card.

Does perfect centering guarantee PSA 10?

No. The rest of the card and the grading company’s overall assessment still matter; a centering measurement is only one observation.
