How a sale earns a place here
A large number alone is not enough. The record must be reproducible from the venue's own archive or announcement.
- Identify the card.Record the year, manufacturer, product, card number, subject, serial numbering, and grade exactly as the source states them.
- Require a primary source.The auction house or transaction venue must publish the price and date. News summaries alone do not qualify.
- Label the transaction.Public auctions and documented private sales stay separate because the available evidence differs.
- Use the venue's final figure.We reproduce the reported amount and note buyer's premium treatment when the source makes it explicit.
- Review the link.Records are checked at publication and during scheduled reviews. A broken or changed source is flagged before the claim is updated.
How to read a record sale without misusing it
The sale describes one exact object at one moment. It does not create a price guide for every card of the same player.
Match identity before price. A different set, serial number, autograph, patch, grade, or grading company means you are studying a different card.
Keep the date visible. A historical sale is evidence of that transaction, not a promise that the result can be repeated.
Use recent comparable sales for valuation. Start with the exact same card and condition whenever possible.
