Why prospect cards can price in greatness before the games begin

The Mahomes Effect is our name for a simple research problem: possibility can command a premium before professional results narrow the range of outcomes. The framework helps collectors separate the story from the evidence.

What is the Mahomes Effect?

The Mahomes Effect is Card Collector Capital's term for pricing an unproven player's cards against a best-case superstar outcome. Before a long professional record exists, highlights, draft status, scarcity, and comparisons with established stars can carry more weight than results.

It is not a rule that cards fall after a debut. Strong play can validate or exceed expectations. Weak play, unclear opportunity, growing card supply, or fewer buyers can reduce demand. Every conclusion still requires exact-card evidence.

Research state

Narrative-heavy

The claim is still driven more by possibility than by matched card and market evidence.

Next evidence to collect

  • Record the year, product, card number, version, grade, and serial stamp.
  • Replace seller listings with completed transactions for the exact card.
  • Check the printed serial number, manufacturer checklist, and relevant population report.
  • Label the player case as pre-professional and keep projections separate from results.

Four evidence stages behind the price story

A card market becomes easier to evaluate as player, product, supply, and transaction records become more complete.

  1. Before professional play

Draft position, scouting, highlights, and projected role dominate. Card supply may be fragmented across college, prospect, unlicensed, and early professional products.

    Highest projection risk
  2. First professional checklist

Collectors must separate pre-professional issues from official rookie cards, then separate base cards, parallels, autographs, and numbered versions.

    Identity risk falls
  3. Games create evidence

Playing time, role, health, production, and team context replace parts of the original projection. New products can also expand card supply.

    Career range narrows
  4. Card markets diverge

Performance does not move every card equally. Scarce autographs, common base cards, different grades, and separate products develop distinct transaction histories.

    Exact comps matter most

Two examples, two limits on the story

These files explain the framework. They do not claim that Mahomes and Wembanyama cards share one price pattern.

Patrick Mahomes

Exceptional outcome

Kansas City selected Mahomes tenth in the 2017 NFL Draft and kept him behind Alex Smith for most of his first season. In 2018, his first season as the primary starter, he threw for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns and won NFL MVP.

His career shows that new evidence can validate an ambitious projection. It does not make a new quarterback's card comparable to a Mahomes rookie. A collector still needs the exact Mahomes year, product, number, version, and grade.

Victor Wembanyama

Strong evidence, separate card markets

Wembanyama won 2023-24 NBA Rookie of the Year after averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.58 blocks in 71 games. By 2025-26, the Spurs reported another All-Defensive First Team selection and the Defensive Player of the Year award.

Those achievements document player performance, not a universal Wembanyama card-price direction. PSA keeps separate sales histories for base, Ice, Silver, color, and other versions of 2023 Panini Prizm #136. A broad claim about his market is incomplete until the exact version and matched dates are named.

What would actually prove a post-rookie price decline?

The claim needs a matched transaction study. Without these controls, a chart can confuse a different parallel, grade, selling format, or supply change with a player-driven move.

  1. Fix the identity.Same year, product, card number, parallel, grade, and serial rule.
  2. Fix the evidence type.Completed sales only, with dates, venues, and sale formats recorded.
  3. Use matched windows.Compare defined periods before and after the milestone, not convenient endpoints.
  4. Show the sample.Report sale count, median, range, and possible outliers for each period.
  5. Name other changes.Population growth, new releases, injuries, role, and marketplace conditions can matter.

The useful rule

Before a player proves more, the market can imagine more. Your research should become stricter as the story becomes louder.

Treat superstar comparisons as questions to test. Keep player evidence, exact-card identity, supply, and completed sales in separate columns until every claim can be traced to a source.

Plain answers to common questions

These answers are also included in the page's FAQ structured data.

What is the Mahomes Effect in sports cards?

The Mahomes Effect is Card Collector Capital's name for the tendency to price an unproven player's cards against a best-case superstar outcome. It is a research model, not an established financial term, a price forecast, or a claim that every prospect market falls after a debut.

Why can prospect cards become expensive before a player turns professional?

Before professional games create a long performance record, buyers can place more weight on draft position, highlights, scarcity, and an imagined ceiling. Early card supply can also be difficult to measure. Those conditions can make stories more influential than evidence.

Do rookie-card prices always fall after a player starts playing?

No. New performance evidence can weaken, confirm, or exceed expectations. Card prices also respond to exact-card supply, grade populations, product demand, selling venue, timing, and the number of real buyers. A universal post-debut decline should not be assumed.

Did Victor Wembanyama card prices fall after his rookie season?

That question cannot be answered responsibly with one broad statement. Compare the same Wembanyama card, parallel, grade, and selling format across matched time windows. A base card, Ice Prizm, Silver Prizm, autograph, and numbered parallel are different markets.

How do I test whether a prospect-card market is a pricing bubble?

Identify the exact card, collect multiple completed sales, document known supply, separate asking prices from transactions, mark the player's evidence stage, and compare matched time windows. If price claims rely mainly on listings, one sale, or comparisons with a different card, the conclusion is not ready.

Does a low serial number prove a prospect card is valuable?

No. A serial number documents one form of card supply. It does not prove buyer demand, authenticity, condition, a future grade, player performance, or a future sale price.
