Which 2026 Topps Heritage Cards Are Short Prints? A Number-by-Number Guide

Why the old number-range shortcut fails

For this release, sorting every card below 301 into an ordinary-base pile gives the wrong result. Jhoan Duran #14 and Jonathan Aranda #20 are starred, while many cards later in the run are not. Topps describes the release as a 400-card set using its 1977 design. That product identity matters: Heritage from another year, a separate release, and a Chrome version need their own references.

Read the small card number on the reverse and keep the name beside it. A matching front design is not enough when a player appears more than once. The checklist designation is an identification fact; it does not establish how many copies exist, an individual pack probability, or a resale premium.

Short print, back variation and Chrome are separate fields

A base short print is a designation within the numbered paper checklist. Image, nickname, design and back variations require an additional distinction. Do not turn every unusual-looking card into an SP, or assume the SP list exhausts every variation in the product. Record the exact variation name only when its own evidence matches.

Owen Caissie illustrates why the notes matter. The PDF lists #88 without the short-print asterisk and lists #360 with both an asterisk and a Back Variation annotation. Keep those numbers separate. The later Chrome checklist is also a separate section; a player appearing in both paper and Chrome does not transfer the paper issue’s distribution to the Chrome card.

Count cards, not lines or player names

A Quad Rookies card can create four spreadsheet rows if you import the PDF without grouping. That inflates a want list and can make one missing card look like four. For example, #372 combines Philip Abner, Eduarniel Núñez, Didier Fuentes and Jonathan Pintaro. It occupies one numbered slot. #376 spans two PDF pages, another place where a careless import can lose names.

Use one inventory row per number and a separate field containing all subjects. Add quantity, condition, storage location and the exact variant you own. For a straight numbered paper set, a Chrome card of the same player should not silently tick the paper slot. Decide whether your project accepts a variation as a substitute before you mark it complete.

Three records you can copy into a want list

For #14, write “2026 Topps Heritage, Jhoan Duran, #14, paper base SP.” For #311, retain “World Series Highlights, Los Angeles Dodgers” rather than inventing a single player from the photograph. For #360, add “Owen Caissie, back variation annotation” so it cannot be confused with #88. These are identity examples drawn from the checklist, not inspected copies or price comparisons.

When shopping, compare the seller’s front and back against that written identity. Then assess condition and delivered cost separately. If the listing supplies only a player name and SP in the title, request the reverse or choose a listing that already shows it. Keep the source page with the record so a future correction can be checked without rebuilding the whole set.
