What changes between Hobby, Jumbo, Value and Mega?
This comparison uses the manufacturer’s Ripped format guide. It is a configuration guide, not a promise that any particular player will appear. Check the current product listing and package wording for the exact SKU you are considering, especially while release information is changing.
Keep the conjunction in the hit statement. An autograph or relic allows either category to satisfy the stated content. An autograph and relic describes both categories. Replacing those phrases with a generic “two hits” or “guaranteed auto” removes information needed to compare boxes.
Read on-average and guaranteed-content statements carefully
| Format | Packs × cards | Listed focus |
|---|---|---|
| Hobby | 20 × 12 = 240 | One autograph OR relic; Victory parallels |
| Hobby Jumbo | 10 × 28 = 280 | One autograph AND relic; Sandglitter parallels |
| Value | 6 × 12 = 72 | Season Tip Off parallels |
| Mega | 12 × 15 = 180 | Four 1981–82 inserts |
Worked example: why pack count misleads
Using the listed configurations, Jumbo contains 40 more cards than Hobby: 280 − 240 = 40. That is about 16.7% more total cards despite having half as many packs. A buyer comparing only the number of packs would reverse the card-count comparison.
Total cards still do not measure the number of base cards, unique cards or useful additions to your collection. Inserts occupy part of a box, duplicates can occur, and neither total establishes how close a particular opening will bring you to completing the base set.
For a budget comparison, divide the actual delivered price of each offer by its listed card count and label the result cost per card. Keep a separate note for the target family and stated hit content. That calculation compares purchase cost only; it does not predict resale returns or establish which format has better odds for a specific rookie.
If you only want a particular exclusive parallel, check whether it is available in the format before doing that arithmetic. A lower cost per card in the wrong format does not help complete the target. Singles can also be compared with the remaining want list once identifiable copies are available.

Schematic. Pack quantity alone cannot determine which format suits your project.
Does AJ Dybantsa #256 identify one particular card?
The official checklist lists AJ Dybantsa #256 in the base set, but that number also appears under Flagship Real One Rookie Autograph and Flagship Real One Rookie Relic. “AJ #256” therefore does not tell you whether an offered card is the ordinary rookie, an autograph or a relic.
Add the checklist family to your inventory and comparison searches. The same practice helps distinguish a printed facsimile signature from a certified autograph: look up the correct section and inspect the actual card rather than treating every visible signature graphic as live ink.
For a first purchase, write a one-line target such as player, season, product, family and parallel. Compare listings against that line. If you cannot verify one of those fields from the photographs, do not silently substitute the nearest-looking card and treat its price as an exact comparable.
Is the release October 22 or November 5?
As checked October 23, the current Topps product landing page and release calendar list November 5. The September 28 Ripped box guide still gives October 22 in its release information. Those official sources conflict. We use the newer current product announcement for planning and keep the older date identified as conflicting information.
A future announced date does not establish an exact on-sale time, immediate stock or delivery to your address. Before a preorder or release-day purchase, recheck the specific offer and distinguish its order window, expected release and shipping estimate.
The landing page describes a 300-card base set. This guide does not use the older article’s player-category breakdown to promise a particular rookie mix. For collection building, follow the current numbered checklist and the actual version received rather than assuming every format supplies the same distribution.
Frequently asked questions
Does a Hobby box promise an autograph?
The reviewed guide says an autograph or relic. Keep the alternative in the statement; do not present it as an autograph-only promise.
Does Jumbo contain more cards even with fewer packs?
Yes, in the listed configurations. The worked calculation above compares total card counts, not unique cards, base-set completion or expected resale value.
Does a Mega promise the same hits as Jumbo?
Do not transfer a statement between formats. The table shows different advertised content, and the exact retail offer should be checked separately.
Can I identify an autograph by its rookie card number?
No. A number can recur across checklist sections. Verify the family and the card’s autograph certification rather than using the number alone.
Which announced release date should I plan around?
The current landing page and calendar say November 5. Recheck them before purchase because the older format guide still carries a different date.
