What is Upper Deck Series 1 and Series 2?
Series 1 opens Upper Deck's annual flagship hockey set and Series 2 continues it with the next base cards and a different group of Young Guns. In the 2025-26 release, Upper Deck describes Series 1 as the first 250 base-set cards and Series 2 as the next 250, but collectors should verify each season's official checklist.
Series 1 and Series 2 are related but not interchangeable. Extended Series can continue the annual base set later. MVP, O-Pee-Chee, Artifacts, SP Authentic, and other Upper Deck products are separate sets.
How to identify the exact card
Start with the parent series. The same season can continue insert families across multiple releases while assigning different card numbers and subjects to each part.
- 1
Season and parent release: Series 1 or Series 2
- 2
Player or subject and complete card number
- 3
Base Set, Base Set - Young Guns, UD Canvas, or another insert section
- 4
Standard card, named parallel, variation, checklist card, or oversized version
- 5
Surface, stock, foil treatment, stated odds, and serial number
- 6
Hobby, e-Pack, retail, tin, blaster, or other configuration
The product language in plain English
- Flagship base set
- Upper Deck's annual main hockey checklist, divided across consecutive series.
- Series 1
- The opening installment with the first group of base cards, Young Guns, and insert entries.
- Series 2
- The next installment with a different group of base cards, Young Guns, and continuing or new inserts.
- Young Guns
- The rookie section within the flagship base set. Series 1 and Series 2 contain different Young Guns subjects.
- UD Canvas
- A separate canvas-stock insert family that can continue across the series and include Canvas Young Guns.
How rookie cards fit into this family
Series 1 and Series 2 divide the season's Young Guns checklist into different groups. A standard Young Guns card, its parallel, a Canvas Young Guns insert, and a checklist card are separate identities even when they feature the same player.
Compare one exact card at a time
- 1
Confirm the season and series
Record whether the card belongs to Series 1 or Series 2 before using its card number.
- 2
Find the checklist section
Match the player and number under Base Set, Young Guns, UD Canvas, or the exact insert name.
- 3
Name the version
Use the official checklist to confirm standard, Clear Cut, Deluxe, Exclusives, Outburst, High Gloss, or another parallel.
- 4
Separate continuing inserts
Do not assume a similar UD Canvas, Dazzlers, or Portraits design belongs to the same series or card number.
- 5
Match condition
Compare similar raw condition or the same grading company and numeric grade.
- 6
Use dated completed sales
Exclude the other series and different versions, then record the sale date and source.
